HellBoy

"Yeah, so what's it to ya?"

My brother has just adopted a small kitten that he helped  rescue from a storm drain. While walking home the other night, he heard its mews calling out from the dark. When he peaked underneath the metal grate, he saw a 12 week old kitten desperately crying for help.  Moving heaven and earth...and making a call to the local fire department, he freed the little guy. When asked by the fireman if he knew of anyone that might be willing to look after the lucky tabby,  my brother claimed kinship immediately and declared that he would take charge of his new found ward.

So now, he finds himself bottle-feeding a very grateful little ball of fur named Splinter. Oh, I also wanted to sketch Hellboy.

Bearly Rid'n

My brother in-law wants to get a motorcycle. He is by all accounts a giant of a man at 6'6" and 350+ lbs. He is a terribly sweet guy. The thought of him riding a motorcycle brings to mind images of Harry Potter's Hagrid tearing along the streets of Little Whinging. My sister asked for a picture of him riding his dream bike. Of course I couldn't resist.

I have always loved the pen and ink/watercolor sketches of Marc Davis. One of my very first books was a book that gave an illustrated history of buccaneers, privateers and pirates. My parents bought me the book from the Pirate's gift shop in the  Magic Kingdom. It featured many of Marc Davis' sketches and studies from his work on the ride. I still have this book today. A bit tattered and worn, but still good.

Inspired by Marc Davis, here he is, just bearly rid'n.

The Last Days of Summer

When  I think back to when I was a kid, I remember that the days of summer seemed to go on forever. In those days, there were endless adventures lurking around every corner.  Eventually, the joys of the endless summer would gave way when every imaginable adventure had been had and the days would grow long with idle boredom.

Soon school would begin and bring its own adventure. To me the beginning of the school year always meant that the countdown to the next summer had already begun!

Tasty Tidbit

So ... what's for lunch?

Friday, May 24, 2013

Since I do most of my work digitally these days , it's really nice to break out the traditional materials and go to work at the drawing table. I made a bunch of doodles on a page ending up with an interesting head shape in the lower left corner. I added a "little" rider on his shoulder and wanted to continue the sketch....but I'd run out of the room on the page.

Solution: tape an additional page to the corner to add real estate to the canvas. Not as quick and easy as it is in Photoshop, but equally as effective and every bit as satisfying. Plus, I had cause to use my 6 year old roll artists' tape.
Have a great weekend!

Bit of a Sketch

Here's another quick sketch I worked on last night. I am intrigued by how adding a diminutive figure to a scene quickly creates a sense of scale.  Somehow, it makes the space on the page seem more expansive and grand.  There is more to this doodle that I'll post tomorrow!!

Care to guess what the rest of the scene looks like?

Goatie

Here I am exploring a character design of a feisty ole' gold prospector for a story set in the Wild, Wild West. I think he still has far too many of his own teeth. I think I am going to try and make him as crusty as a slug of three day old rye.

FusionFall Heroes

So I've been away from my blog for a very long time. Where have I been? I've been working on Cartoon Network's latest multiplayer game:  FusionFall Heroes The team has been working round the clock to build this co-op online experience for kids. It's awesome to play and was a real blast to make. It launches today.

Now that the game is live, I'll be able to start posting some of the concept and promo art I created for the game. Thanks for dropping by!
